Stair Design

Modern trends in rational use of the territory more than ever encourage the construction of houses not in “width”, but in “height”. This applies to private structures, but even apartment dwellers are trying to organize a multi-level layout, thereby expanding the usable area. To combine the upper and lower spaces there is a need to build a staircase to the second floor, on the features of the choice of which we will dwell in detail.

Different types of stairs by design

When designing a staircase, the first thing you have to do is to focus on the area of the room rather than the design in order to select the ideal product in terms of design and size. There are two main types of stairs.

Walk Stairs

A common variant of stairs designed with biomechanics of movement in mind and providing comfortable, safe movement. They consist of marches with 3 to 15 steps. If the maximum quantity is not enough, height is divided into two apertures between which the small platform or foreign steps is established. Such constructions name already two marches.

Marching stairs differ in the form and are straight, turning (L-shaped or U-shaped) or curved. At definition of this parameter it is necessary to lean on the area of a room, height of ceilings, an arrangement of the second floor.

According to the type of support structure, there are two types of marching products: on stringers and bowstrings. In the first case, the steps are stacked on top of the beams, and in the second – on the inside of the supporting element are made special grooves.

It is necessary to choose also a kind of steps. Details with steps look more massive and fit perfectly into the classic interior, and those that are without them, will be suitable for a modern home because of the light construction.

In general, the marching stairs are available in a wide range and even for small items you can choose a suitable specimen or combine it with other items.

Spiral staircases

The principle of such constructions is very simple: on the installed rod are attached steps that spiral upwards. They do not take up extra space and are compact enough.

The main reason for which spiral staircases concede marches – difficulties at movement because of absence of a strong support. It is not recommended to install such a copy in a house where children or elderly people live. The following parametres are considered optimum: the central width of steps should be not less than 20 sm, and the widest part – no more than 40 sm.

In other cases, spiral staircases can be considered an excellent option for both modern and classic styles. Thanks to their spiral shape, they become a key element of the interior, and to diversify the design will help products of different shapes – from square to octagonal.

Stairs to the hospital

It is not possible to install a ladder of this type in the centre of the room – it is supported by a supporting wall to which the stairs are attached using bolts. Assembled in one system, they form a single bearing element that gives the structure a light, almost weightless look, through which it is often used in modern interiors.

Despite the visual fragility, the products can withstand from 500 to 1100 kg, depending on the material and manufacturer. In addition, bolts allow you to adjust the height of the steps after installation.

Ladders on hospitals with rails which take a part of loading on themselves use popularity. It is possible to experiment with a basis, the form and illumination for creation of a unique variant for your house.

Choose the material for the stairs

The stairs are made of different materials, which endow them with certain aesthetic and practical properties.

Wooden stairs

Representing a staircase in the house, immediately emerges the image of a solid wooden structure with curved railing and a beautiful deep texture. It can be a luxurious wenge, oak or minimalist wood of simple species. Optimal options are ash, walnut and beech, but the pine is not strong enough to withstand the required load. The lacquer coating will protect against negative environmental impacts, but it will need to be renewed regularly.

This material is suitable for any construction, but it looks the most organic as a marching product. For country or American style, such a solution is indispensable.

Metal ladders

Metal structures will serve you half a century, preserving the original, neat appearance. For this purpose, choose specimens of stainless steel, which is not subject to corrosion, as chrome or painted versions have a limited life – no more than 6-7 years.
