Stair Railings

In a private home, the staircase is one of the most important objects of the structure, to which considerable attention is paid. In addition to its size, shape, a great role is played by the design of functional and beautiful handrails, which will be not only a reliable protection, but also a great decorative element of the interior, complementing the idea of style.

In order for the stairs and handrails to harmonize with the whole environment, you need to choose the right material, as well as know the basic requirements of the style direction in which the home is decorated.

This is exactly what we will talk about in this article, and in the final part we offer you to visit the photo gallery with the best pictures of ready-made interiors.

Main features

The railing is a stairway fence. They have two main tasks: protection against falling during stairway travel, and a support function that can be leaned on when climbing, which is especially important for elderly people.

Very often the concept of handrails is confused with handrails, but in fact handrails are only a part of the handrail, which is also included:

  • Balusters are the main props to which the handrail is mounted. Often this element is assigned not only the functions of the main support, but also decorative;
  • Fillers – the materials that fill the gaps between the balusters. Very often in modern minimalist interiors, they are simply absent, as in most cases serve as an ornament. However, it should be understood that the filler provides a greater level of safety, especially if the house has young children.

The handrail can be an independent element, which is attached directly to the wall (for example, if the stairway is fenced with walls on both sides). In such a case, it serves as a handrail. There are legal regulations according to which the height of the handrail must be at least 90 cm so that the structure is safe.

The fence can be installed on one side of the stairs or framed on two sides. It is necessary to consider width of steps – if it exceeds 1,25 m, handrail establish on both parties.

Choosing design of a ladder for the house, it is necessary to consider distance between supports – it should be such that the child could not stick the head, after all such cases often took place on ladder apertures of the Soviet constructions.

Materials for manufacturing

Various materials are used to manufacture the railings, the choice of which will determine both the strength of the structure and its decorative effect and, of course, the cost. Railings can be interior, located inside the building or exterior, decorating street structures.

For the latter, more durable materials (metal, concrete) are preferred. Let us take a closer look at the types of materials and their properties.

Wooden railing

The railing made of wood is a classic that never goes out of fashion. Natural wood can be represented by the whole structure or only the railing is made of it, and the supports remain metal. The main advantages of the material are its environmental performance, strength and durability with proper care.

It is worth noting that the wood is subject to external factors such as humidity and temperature fluctuations, so wood structures should be subject to periodic treatment – impregnation with antiseptic compounds, coating with varnish or paint.

The special advantage of wood – high aesthetics, lack of repeatability of patterns of the material, the individuality of which is laid down by nature itself. Pliability of processing allows to produce various decorative elements: carved details for classic interiors or spectacular signs of aging for the styles of Provance and Shabbi-chic.

One of the ways to design a wooden staircase that deserves special attention is to use different types of wood, which contrast with each other in color solutions. This option can be quite expensive, so the design can give different shades with the help of special paints, and the result will be no less effective.

Metal railing

The metal structures of the railing are made of stainless steel, aluminium or forged parts. They often become a real decoration of the street stairs of private houses, harmoniously blending in with the overall concept of buildings. A distinction is made between the following types of metal handrails:

  1. Welded – such structures, as a rule, have a low cost, with some skills and appropriate tools, they can be made at home;
  2. Prefabricated – are made of prefabricated blocks attached to each other;
  3. castings – an expensive pleasure, which requires considerable effort during installation;
  4. Forged – have the highest aesthetic performance.
